A street football tournament for women, the Global Goals World Cup (GGWCup) is the first activist World Cup. GGWCup uses the power of sport to raise awareness of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and to engage women in the sustainable development agenda.
We’re excited to be co-hosting the Copenhagen edition of GGWCup on 14 May during the week of the Copenhagen Fashion Summit 2019. The tournament will end its world tour, which spans multiple continents, with a global final in New York City during the UN General Assembly. The Copenhagen GGWCup tournament will award teams points not only for scoring goals, but also for taking action on their chosen sustainable development goal, for engaging their peers and the crowd and for creatively reinterpreting the conventional sports uniform, turning it into a powerful message of identity and sustainability.
Partnering with leading forum for sustainability in fashion
For the Copenhagen event Eir Soccer is launching the “Sustainify my uniform” challenge as part of the event: Encouraging teams to create sustainable uniforms by recycling, up-cycling or using sustainable materials to imagine a future of sustainable sports fashion.
The best sustainable uniform idea is awarded a special prize endorsed by Eva Kruse, CEO and President of Global Fashion Agenda, the organisation behind Copenhagen Fashion Summit. The winner will be chosen by a panel of high-profile judges from the fashion industry, who are in town for Copenhagen Fashion Summit.
Who takes the field and what goes down?
Each tournament is a one-day festival celebrating sustainable solutions and innovative ideas for the UN Sustainable Development Goals brought to life by the active teams and participating partners. 24 teams of 6-8 women age 18+ are selected for each event. In Copenhagen 12 special European teams are invited from 12 EU countries as part of an Erasmus+ programme to promote access for women to sports and civic engagement.
The games are played on small 5v5 pitches in unusual urban settings. The arena area is always designed as a playful take on the conventional sports event, integrating activism, sustainability, fashion and art into a diverse mix of expressions. The afternoon of games is accompanied by talks, visual displays, artistic performances and inspiring storytelling about citizen driven action for sustainable development.
